Our beautful coast and our way of life is under threat. Oil and Gas companies' shocking plans to drill for fossil fuels off our favourite beaches are being approved while we have been distracted with COVID 19, risking devastating the coastal ecosystem, the climate and our way of life.

The beautiful coast from Manly through the Central Coast to Newcastle has been desginated Petroleum Exploration Permit 11 (PEP 11), 4,500 square km of ocean along our favourite beaches. Applications for an extension for PEP 11 (due to expire in 2021), and to change the title (from the now cancelled seismic testing) to allow drilling, are apparently nearing imminent approval from the title administrator (NOPTA).

These approvals rest with the "Joint Authority: the responsible Commonwealth and State Ministers", respectively Keith Pitt MP (Federal) and John Barilaro MP (NSW State), who we will implore, along with our Federal and State MPs, to end PEP 11 and the uncertainty and distress it brings to communities.

Our beloved coast, within the world renowned whale migration path and dolphin habitat, turned into a Petroleum Exploration zone? Drilling and rigs off our favourite beaches?

Gas is a dirty fossil fuel which causes 84 times more climate damage than carbon dioxide, and 2/3 of our gas is exported - in 2019 Australia was the largest exporter of gas in the world. Drilling for gas in a climate emergency and risking devastating our coast for gas that we do not need is completely unnacceptable.

Drilling under the ocean risks an oil spill with risk of catastrophic harm to the entire ecosystem of the east coast of Australia, and beyond, putting at risk millions of marine animals, and impacting on our health and wellbeing.

To save our climate, our environment, our way of life, our precious whales, dolphins and marie life, and to save our coast and our children's futures, we must STOP PEP 11.

Oil and gas companies plan to drill for gas off NSW within PEP 11, Petroleum Exploration Permit 11  (the Offshore Sydney Basin ),  4,500 square km of ocean from Manly through the Central Coast to Newcastle, in a shocking plan to industrialise NSW's iconic coastline,  that risks devastating the ecosystem, the climate, the economy, and communities' wellbeing and way of life.

Approvals (from NOPTA - the title administrator ) for drilling and to extend the PEP 11, Offshore Sydney Basin title  (due to expire in early 2021)  are apparently imminent.
These approvals rest with the Joint Authority: the responsible Commonwealth and State Ministers:  Keith Pitt MP (Federal) and  John Barilaro MP (NSW State).

We respectfully ask these ministers to in turn respect communities and hear our concerns, and we implore you to represent us, your constituents, to these ministers, to prevent extension of PEP11 and to reject the proposal to change the title to drilling. (Note the proponent of PEP 11 withdrew from seismic testing, but wishes to change the permit to proceed straight to drilling, and extend the PEP 11 permit, due to expire in February 2021.)

The iconic east coast of NSW is home to millions, is in the whale migration path, hosts a rich biodiversity and brings millions of dollars to the economy in thriving tourism industries.  Communities are deeply connected to the coast and depend on it for livelihoods and wellbeing. We love our coast, our whales, dolphins and marine life,  and our way of life.

Drilling for gas in a climate emergency when 2/3 of Australia's gas is exported, (in 2019 Australia was the largest exporter of natural gas in the world), and methane from gas is 84 times more dangerous to the climate than carbon dioxide that will only exacerbate climate damage, risking all life on earth, is unacceptable.

Drilling under the sea risks pollution and oil spill (oil is often present where there is gas) that risks catastrophic harm to the entire east coast of Australia and beyond, threatening millions of marine animals and seabirds, the entire coastal ecosystem, livelihoods and wellbeing.

Communities and the economy are already struggling with the uncertainty of COVID 19.  In the wake of climate-damage fuelled unprecedented devastating bushfires that killed over a billion animals, decimated habitat and deeply affected communities, and in the midst of a global pandemic, now more than ever we need to prevent further climate damage for a healthy ecosystem in order to survive.

We need an economic recovery in renewable energy with its secure long-lasting jobs and  lower emission industry and manufacturing, (and reduced household energy bills), that can support communities into a new safer, cleaner, prosperous vision for Australia, instead of drilling for fossil fuels off the iconic coast of NSW that threatens to destroy our way of life, and the very climate and economy we need to be restoring.

New offshore permits now have a community consultation period - extension of existing offshore petroleum permits have no such consultation. Communities along the most heavily populated area of Australia should have a say in whether or not an existing petroleum exploration permit, that affects the coast that defines them, is renewed.

For over a decade communities from Newcastle, Lake Macquarie through the Central Coast to the Northern Beaches of Sydney to Manly and beyond, have been subject to added stress and uncertainty as to the development of PEP 11. Haven’t we been through enough?

We ask you please to urgently request the Joint Authority: Keith Pitt MP and John Barilaro MP, to not approve the extension of PEP 11, nor approve the change in title to offshore drilling within PEP 11.  We ask you to please consider communities, the coastal ecosystem, the climate and the economy, in this time of uncertainly and upheaval, and urgently STOP PEP 11 to save the coast that so many Australians love and depend on for wellbeing and livelihoods.
